It’s no surprise social media is extremely influential in today's cyber society, in positive and negative ways. Nowadays everybody has a social media account and privacy is a thing of the past when posting your life online became a socially acceptable and encouraged activity. The world of social media is primarily dominated by younger generations and has become much more than a way of sharing your day to day activities.
Social media has become an empire where people feel free to express themselves and create societal and political movements, it’s also an immensely popular marketing strategy for a lot of brands. Social media is essentially "run" by millennials due to the fact that many millennials grew up with the internet and all that came along with it. According to a report by Common Sense Media, 75 percent of teenagers in America currently have profiles on social networking sites, making them easily one of the most influential groups to using the sites.
There are many downsides of youth usage on social media sites such as cyber bullying, low self esteem issues, sleep deprivation and more, but in many instances the good outweighs the bad. Social media is a modern tool, helpful in expanding networking, knowledge and making a change. Social media has positively impacted the lives of many people, it allows users to interact with like minded individuals about relevant topics in the snap of a finger, greater furthering social change. This tool is unlike anything we as a culture has ever had for our advantage, as it advances and we learn to harness its potential, it will become an even greater asset to society and various social movements.
