Prompt 5: Exploring the Undergraduate Communication Association

By: Emily
When you find a club on campus that has to do with your major, it’s a sigh of relief. Finally, a group of people with the same interests and goals, people there to support you and a group you can really relate to. The excitement I experienced when I came across Michigan States Undergraduate Communication Association was like no other.

The UCA is a pre-professional organization dedicated to undergraduate students of MSU seeking a career in the communication field. Their goal is to provide education about the field and assist with furthering opportunities, internships and job searches. They do this by organizing seminars, providing resources and assisting students in furthering crucial networking. The main focus of the meeting I attended was what can you do with a communication degree. Naturally, I expected the meeting to be very entertaining and informative due to the circumstances of it being presented by and for communication students, and that is exactly what I experienced.
The community experience was very reassuring and informative. At the meeting I got a chance to speak to advisors and faculty members about the opportunities this career path can provide, and I received very helpful information about previous students. I was given a pamphlet with a lengthy list of the jobs recent graduates have received which significantly aided me in this process. The atmosphere of the meeting was very relaxed and casual, with provided snacks, future communication majors surrounded me all engaging in conversations eagerly discussing opportunities.
The truth about this experience versus its representation was very similar in nature. The meeting was very informative and represented the communications community at MSU in a great light, making me feel welcomed and comfortable to explore my degree to it’s fullest potential.
